Our Banners

The illustrations highlighting some of the pages on this website come from our renowned collection of Sanctuary banners. Our church members were Canadian pioneers in making these liturgical hangings. More than 100 hand-crafted banners have been created by congregation members since the first one was hung in December, 1968.

While lovely to look at, the purpose of the banners is to convey the Christian message and mark the seasons of the Church year - Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving and Advent, or Christmas. Particular favorites are sometimes used at the weddings or funerals of church members.

Designed in various materials, the art works range from small depictions of Christian symbols to large-scale renderings of the Nativity

and The Last Supper.

Some were made by individuals while others were group efforts. The "Window of Peace" Quilt, for example, involved 28 church members who spent a year stitching together over 2,000 pieces.

Several colorful works were made by members of our Sunday School.

Many of the banners have traveled to exhibitions across the country and some have been loaned for such special events as meetings of the church's Montreal-Ottawa regional conference and gatherings of the General Council of the United Church. One was displayed at the World Council of Churches headquarters in Geneva. Our artisans have held banner workshops for other churches and published two books, Banners Now and Banners and How, both of which were sold nation-wide.
